I used to do all the wrong things until I started doing this, and realized that to build real connections, both the sender and the receiver have a role to play.

Networking sounds simple:
“Pick an industry. Engage. Send DMs.”
But in reality, many messages go unseen, unanswered, and ignored.

So if you are the sender, do this

Make your outreach clear, respectful, and intentional.

👍 Be brief, introduce yourself, state your reason, and make a specific ask.
Hi “X”, I admire your work in “Y”. I’m exploring a similar path and would love your insight on “Z”. That way, your outreach is clear, respectful, and intentional.
👍 Personalize your message, avoid copy-paste DMs.

👍 Engage genuinely with their content before reaching out.

👍 Follow up once politely if there’s no response.

Don’t do this 👇
👎 Send vague “Hi” or “Can we connect?” messages.

👎 Ask for a job immediately.

👎 Overshare or sound desperate.

Spam multiple follow-ups.

If You’re Receiving Messages
A quick acknowledgment, a like, an emoji, or a short reply can mean a lot. It tells the sender, “I see you.” Even small gestures build encouragement and community.
