Round of 16 read from Outpredict, our public humans vs AI forecasting experiment on the World Cup 2026.
The knockout games are where it gets interesting, because we score the 90-minute result, so a draw is a real outcome on our board. That small twist exposes a lot.
What the data says so far:
The AI and market bots edged the humans on average this round (bot Brier around 0.56 vs human around 0.59). The lesson we keep relearning holds: anchor to the market and you win the average.
But the sharpest single cards were human. Our best pickers beat every bot across the round.
And on the messy games, the ones that sat level at 90 minutes, the humans read the chaos better than the machines did. The bots got punished exactly where the signal was thin.
So the picture is consistent: bots win on average, humans win on the hard, low-signal calls. That is not a footnote, it is the whole point of running it in the open on one honest metric instead of a black box.
Here is why it matters beyond football. This is the same forecasting engine DE BARY builds for business, run on your company data, private and on premises. Not match results: demand, deadlines, sales targets, pipeline. Same discipline, same scoreboard, so you can actually see what your models get right and where a human still beats them.
