July's Book of the Month : 'The Mapmaker's Wife' by Hannah Evans

The Mapmaker’s Wife tells the story of Bea Bell, a spirited young woman from Grenada in the 1950s who falls in love with Patrick Anderson, a British surveyor. Despite facing racism and social prejudice, they marry and move from Grenada to England, then to Sierra Leone, where they raise a family during a time of political upheaval and decolonization.

In 2015, Bea’s niece Amelia returns to Grenada to sort through her late mother’s belongings and discovers hidden letters and mementos revealing Bea’s secret past. As Amelia uncovers the truth, she learns more about her family’s struggles with identity, love, and belonging across generations.

The novel explores themes of interracial love, colonial history, family secrets, and the search for identity, weaving together a moving dual-timeline narrative that connects past and present.
