Entrepreneurship cannot be learned from a textbook alone.
We can study business models. We can learn finance, economics, marketing, leadership, and strategy. We can examine successful companies and understand why some ideas succeed while others fail.
But some of the most important lessons—and some of the most important opportunities—happen when people connect.
That is why the McNair Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship is about more than formal education.
It is about building a community.
Education Gives You Knowledge. A Network Creates Opportunity.
The McNair Center exists to help people think entrepreneurially: to recognize problems, develop ideas, take action, and use entrepreneurship as a way to create meaningful impact.
But entrepreneurship rarely happens alone.
Behind almost every successful venture is a network of people: someone who offered advice, made an introduction, became a customer, joined the team, provided capital, opened a door, challenged an assumption, or simply encouraged an entrepreneur to keep going.
Sometimes one conversation changes the trajectory of an idea.
Sometimes one introduction changes the trajectory of a career.
The McNair Center Community is being created to make more of those conversations possible.
A Community Where Ideas and People Can Find One Another
Imagine a student with an idea being able to connect with an experienced founder who has already built a company in that industry.
Imagine a startup founder discovering a potential advisor, customer, employee, mentor, or collaborator within the community.
Imagine an industry leader sharing a real-world challenge and finding students and entrepreneurs interested in helping solve it.

The McNair Center Community will bring together students, aspiring entrepreneurs, founders, startups, alumni, business leaders, mentors, investors, and others who believe in the power of entrepreneurship.
The objective isn't simply to create another directory of people.
We want to create connections that lead somewhere.
Bringing the Real World Into the Community
The McNair Center already believes deeply in learning beyond the classroom. Its programming includes business idea and business plan competitions, conferences, the Pioneer Society, the StartupMax Speaker Series, MakerLab training, and opportunities to learn directly from experienced entrepreneurs.
The community extends that philosophy.
We will bring industry leaders and experienced entrepreneurs into the network to share what they are seeing, what they have learned, and where they believe opportunities are emerging.
Members will be able to discover events, conversations, people, ideas, and opportunities that might otherwise never cross their paths.
And importantly, those relationships don't have to disappear when an event ends.
A speaker can become a mentor.
A classmate can become a co-founder.
A founder can become an employer.
An alumnus can become an investor.
A conversation can become a company.
From an Event to an Ongoing Network
Traditional events have a limitation.
People gather for an hour or two, hear a great speaker, exchange a few business cards, and then go home.
We want something different.
When someone attends a McNair Center event, they should be entering a larger ecosystem of people and opportunities.
Before an event, members can discover who else is part of the community.
During an event, they can meet people with shared interests.
After the event, those relationships can continue.
Over time, every new student, founder, mentor, speaker, alumnus, and industry leader makes the network more valuable for everyone else.
The event may end. The network should continue.
Entrepreneurship Is About Creating Value for Others
This vision also reflects something fundamental about the McNair Center.
Entrepreneurship is not simply about starting companies or maximizing profit. It is about developing the agency to recognize problems and create solutions that serve others economically, socially, and environmentally.
The Center emphasizes freedom, stewardship and responsibility, innovation, practical wisdom, perseverance, humility, and pursuit of the common good.
A strong entrepreneurial community can put those principles into action.
