The Problem is Purpose Left Untapped.

The Problem of Student Disengagement

DISENGAGEMENT EPIDEMIC:
Here’s why our work matters
Nationally, between 40% to 60% of students show signs of classroom disengagement, even before the pandemic—through lack of participation, emotional withdrawal, chronic absenteeism or superficial learning behaviors.

By 8th grade, nearly 70% of students in America have disengaged from school. Not because they lack ability, but because they don’t see themselves in what they’re learning.

In Houston, Texas, according to recent TX poll, Nearly 50% of Houston middle schoolers (between 60k-70k sixth, seventh and eighth graders attending private, charter and public schools) are disengaged/actively disengaged.

At a Houston Charter School (~270 students), where INNERVERSE piloted its Personal Development + Career Awareness program, this disconnect was clear. Baseline surveys showed~50% of surveyed 8th graders gave the responsibility of maintaining their interest and engagement in class to someone else, fewer than 1 in 5 students could answer basic questions about graduation endorsements, GPA, or career clusters, and only 25% felt confident identifying their personal values and strengths.

Disengagement is not just about “boredom”—it is deeply tied to mental health and identity formation.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
We believe students are 100% responsible for maintaining their engagement and interest in class. However, key adults who are the gatekeepers to access of resources that support their assumption of responsibility, share equal accountability for creating the culture and environment for students to engage in learning.

The INNERVERSE Solution is working!

At INNERVERSE, we flip that script. Our ecosystem creates experiences that help kids discover who they are, name their values, and connect their passions to future pathways.

And it works!--85% of our students report more confidence in their future decisions.

Our solution is INNERVERSE’s dual-impact model: combining personal development + career alignment while engaging families and guest industry career professionals alongside students to change trajectories early.

We are Powering Inner Purpose!
  • Teachers: “...new light in students’ eyes”
  • Parents: "...more meaningful conversations at dinner"
  • To date: 400 middle schoolers reached through partnerships with Houston area charter schools and community organizations.
  • Students: 75% of 8th graders were able to choose a career based on their knowledge of gifts, values and purpose, 80% changed their career decisions based on their gained knowledge of self.

We disrupt the cycle of disengagement. We provide kids with the tools necessary to:
  • Acknowledge, recognize, and honor themselves in their transitional moments of key decision-making, and
  • Prioritize self awareness and personal values as a North Star for future career planning.

We are proving that PURPOSE is the antidote to disengagement.
