Eloping Isn’t Rebellion. It’s Regulation.
When a child with autism bolts from the room…
When a teen leaves school without warning…
When an adult disappears mid-conversation…
It’s not defiance. It’s not drama.
It’s dysregulation.
Elopement is often the brain’s emergency exit.
The body is screaming: “I’m not safe here.”
Instead of asking:
❌ “How do I stop this?”
Let’s ask:
✅ “What’s overwhelming them right now?”
✅ “What does their nervous system need to feel safe again?”
Behavior is communication.
And elopement is a signal, not a sin.
Let’s stop punishing survival.
And start building safety.
