How to Price Your Coaching Services: Lessons from My Journey

How to Price Your Coaching Services: Lessons from My Journey

One of the biggest questions I had when I first became a coach was, "How much should I charge for my services?" This was a difficult question for me to answer when I started as a coach 8 years ago. Like many new coaches, I struggled with self-doubt and uncertainty about my worth.

When I first stepped into the world of coaching, I kept thinking of myself as a newly trained coach, trying to find clients and figure out what my services were worth. I had recently transitioned from a career in radio and television to counseling and working in social services with the Department of Corrections. I had a deep desire to help people, and money wasn’t my primary motivator. My focus was on helping individuals discover and overcome their barriers.

However, once I received my Life Coach Certification and decided to start my own business, I had to confront the big question: "How much am I worth?"

The Realization: Your Past Experiences and Education Matter

One mistake I made early on was not fully valuing my past experiences and education. I thought of myself as inexperienced simply because I was new to coaching, even though I had years of experience working with people in various capacities. I failed to recognize that my background in counseling, social services, and media gave me unique insights and skills that were valuable to my clients.

It’s normal to feel like a novice when you’re just starting out. But as a coach, it’s important to remember that you are a professional. Your experiences, education, and the unique perspective you bring to your clients all contribute to the value of your services.

 How to Determine Your Pricing

Here are some steps that helped me determine how to price my coaching services:

1. **Reflect on Your Experience and Expertise**: Consider your background, education, and any relevant experiences that add value to your coaching practice. Don’t underestimate what you bring to the table.

2. **Research the Market**: Look at what other coaches in your niche are charging. While it’s important not to compare yourself to others, this can give you a ballpark figure to start with. Remember, though, that your pricing should reflect your unique value, not just what others are doing.

3. **Understand Your Target Audience**: Who are you serving? What are they willing to invest in their personal growth or business success? Understanding your audience will help you set a price that they are willing to pay and that reflects the value you provide.

4. **Be Confident in Your Value**: Believe in your product—your coaching services. If you believe in the impact you can have on your clients, set your prices accordingly. Your pricing is a reflection of the confidence you have in the transformation you can facilitate.

5. **Don’t Be Afraid to Adjust**: As you gain more experience and refine your offerings, don’t hesitate to adjust your prices. Your worth as a coach will evolve over time, and so should your pricing.

Final Thoughts

Pricing your coaching services can be a daunting task, especially when you’re just starting out. But remember, you are more than just a "new coach." Your past experiences, education, and passion all contribute to the value you bring to your clients. Be confident in what you offer, and don’t be afraid to set a price that reflects that confidence.

In the end, your pricing should reflect your belief in the value you provide. When you believe in your product, your clients will too. So, take the time to assess your worth, set your prices confidently, and watch your coaching practice thrive.
