👁️ Wanna Land That Pitch? Watch Their Eyes First
Let me let you in on something I wish more people knew when they walk into a room to pitch their business, their brand, or even just an idea:
It’s not always about what you say — it’s about how they think.
And guess what?
People show you exactly how they think... with their eyes.
This is where NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) comes in. But don’t let the big words scare you. All it really means is learning how folks process the world around them — and adjusting how you speak to match that.
So if you’ve ever felt like someone “just didn’t vibe with you,” even though your offer was solid? This one’s for you.
👀 So, What’s the Deal with Eye Movements?
When people are thinking — like really processing info — they tend to look in certain directions. That eye movement can tell you if they’re trying to:
Remember something
Imagine something
Hear something internally
Or even feel something emotional
It’s like a mini-map to how their brain works.
Here’s the simple breakdown (from your perspective while you’re facing them):
👁️ Eye Direction | What’s Going On in Their Head | How You Should Pitch |
---|---|---|
↖️ Up Left | Remembering a picture | Show past results, use visuals |
↗️ Up Right | Imagining a new scene | Ask them to envision the future, use “what if…” |
← Side Left | Recalling a sound | Share testimonials, real conversations |
→ Side Right | Making up a sound | Be creative, talk through scenarios |
↙️ Down Left | Talking to themselves | Be logical, give them thinking room |
↘️ Down Right | Feeling a feeling | Lead with emotion, experience, or gut impact |
💡 How Do You Use This in Real Life?
Let’s say you’re pitching someone your product or service. Don’t jump straight into PowerPoint mode.
Start with a soft question like:
“What does success on this project look like for you?”
“Have you tried something like this before?”
And then... watch their eyes. Not in a creepy way — just be present.
Where do they look when they pause to think?
That’s your cue.
🎯 Adjust Your Pitch Like This:
If they look UP (Visual thinkers):
Use visuals, mockups, videos
Say stuff like: “Let me paint a picture for you…”
If they look SIDEWAYS (Auditory thinkers):
Share a client quote or describe what others are saying
Say: “Can you hear what your team might say once this is working?”
If they look DOWN (Feelers or deep thinkers):
Speak to emotions and outcomes
Say: “How would it feel to have this done and off your plate?”
Bonus: If they tilt their head or nod slowly, they’re processing deeply.
Give them room. Don’t rush. Let them land.
⚠️ But Heads Up…
This isn’t a trick or mind game. It’s not about manipulating anyone.
It’s about connecting. For real.
Also:
It doesn’t work exactly the same for everyone (left-handed folks, neurodivergent thinkers, trauma survivors — people process differently)
It’s not a lie detector
It’s just a tool. A super useful one.
🤝 Rapport Is Everything
At the end of the day, people buy from people they like, trust, and feel understood by.
When you pay attention to how someone thinks — not just what they say — you show up differently. More grounded. More aligned. More human.
So don’t just talk at people. Tune into how they’re wired.
Match their style. Build that bridge.
They’ll feel it — even if they don’t know what you’re doing.
🧭 Real Talk
Want to connect better, pitch stronger, and close more deals?
Watch their eyes. Match their vibe. Adjust your message.
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about being present — and speaking in a way they can truly hear.
And that’s where the magic happens.
